ObjectiveTo explore the effect of Mingmu Yanggan Pills combined with Recombinant Human Epidermal Growth Factor (rhEGF) Eye Drops on postoperative corneal edema and inflammatory factors in patients with cataract. MethodsEighty patients with corneal edema after cataract surgery were randomly divided into observation group (39 cases, 47 eyes) or control group (41 cases, 47 eyes). The control group was treated with rhEGF Eye Drops, based on which the observation group was orally administrated Mingmu Yanggan Pills additionally. Both groups received treatment for 4 weeks. The clinical efficacy, corneal edema resolution time, and pre- and post-treatment visual acuity, stability of tear film (breakup time of tear film [BUT], Schirmer test [SIT] filter paper soaking length), and serum inflammatory factors (interleukin [IL]-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor α [TNF-α]) levels were compared between the two groups. The occurrence of adverse reactions of the two groups was recorded. ResultsThe effective rate of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, and corneal edema resolution time of affected eye in the observation group was shorter than that in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the observation group yielded higher visual acuity, longer BUT and SIT filter paper soaking length as compared with before treatment and the control group, whereas lower levels of serum IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α as compared with before treatment and the control group (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of adverse reactions between the two groups (P>0.05). ConclusionMingmu Yanggan Pills combined with rhEGF Eye Drops can more accelerate relief of postoperative corneal edema in cataract patients, ameliorate visual acuity and tear film stability, alleviate inflammatory responses, exerting superior effects to single rhEGF Eye Drops therapy, with a relatively favorable safety.
